what is a posed newborn photoshoot?

There are generally two types of newborn photography sessions- posed & lifestyle. As an in home photographer working in Western Sydney & the Blue Mountains areas- i offer posed newborn sessions.

This allows you to receive studio quality images in the comfort of your own home. I provide professional lighting so all images are beautifully lit - and noone would even know the photoshoot was done on the floor of your loungeroom!

An at home newborn photoshoot with Joy! Images usually begins with baby being nice and sleepy- with my portable heater blowing warm air gently over baby, i capture some pure & simple sleepy shots. If baby is content i’ll add a wrap and gently pose baby on the bean bag to capture a variety of different angles.

If your baby is a little unsettled or wide awake it makes it difficult to keep their little hands and feet from moving about everywhere, so in those instances we move on to wrapped poses.

Once baby is all wrapped up nice and toasty they usually settle in for a nice deep sleep. I’ll move through a variety of poses with and without headbands and bonnets. I tend to stick to neutral colour pallets with some blue and pink tones mixed in.

Once i’ve captured baby wrapped, i’ll start to slowly unwrap them- this is also where i cross my fingers and hope they stay asleep! A sleepy baby is alot easier to photograph!

I really love these simple poses where baby is all curled up asleep on the posing bag. Moving from the larger beanbag onto a smaller doughnut beanbag (known as the posie) i’ll introduce some curly layers- and again introduce some bonnets and headbands. All going well, i’ll change baby into a little outfit and add some super cute tiny teddies to the mix.

Some of the images i capture on the curly layers (and dark beanbag) will later be edited into more elaborate prop setups that i don’t have the room to carry with me for the photoshoot.

Next stop- back to the beanbag for some tummy shots. Most babies quite like being in this position and it always seems such a shame to move them again when they are so content.

Throughout the session i am also using my macro lens on the second camera to capture all those closeup little details - tiny hands & feet, toes, lips, eyelashes.

We’re almost done! From here baby is undressed and i’ll try and get some naked shots (if mum and dad are ok with it)- I carry waterproof layers in my bag of goodies to ensure any little accidents don’t do any damage. I love being able to capture those little back rolls & in-utero like sleeping position.

Baby asleep safe in a parents hands is one of my favourite shots! It is a great reminder of just how tiny your precious newborn is- and how quickly they grow up

Finally- once all the newborn shots are done we move onto family photos if you want them. Baby is wrapped up again and i’ll either utilise a plain wall within your home as a backdrop, or photograph you on the lounge together. If you have other children i usually get the sibling shots done when baby is wrapped at the beginning of the session so they can get out of their “good clothes” and go play. I set aside 3 hrs for my newborn photoshoots- this allows plenty of time to get baby settled, and have top up feeds if required. Most newborn shoots take 2-2.5hrs.

So there you have a quick rundown of how my newborn posed photoshoots are run. The focus is heavily on your baby and placing them gently into womb like poses. By using digital set-ups i am able to safely pose your baby and complete the more complex final image during the edit phase.

As a Blue Mountains local, i travel within the mountains, across Western Sydney and The Hills District to give new parents the chance to experience their newborn photoshoot in the safety and comfort of their own home.
